[[フロド・バギンズ]]が[[躍る小馬亭]]で窮地を脱するため、やけっぱちで歌った滑稽な歌。元々は[[ビルボ・バギンズ]]の作。
小馬亭の集会室で[[ホビット庄]]の出来事を話して聞かせていた[[ペレグリン・トゥック]]は調子に乗って[[誕生会>ビルボの別れの宴]]でビルボが姿を消した様子を実演しようとしてしまい、秘密にしておくべき「バギンズ」の名に聴衆の注意が喚起されかねない事態となる。そこでフロドは聴衆の注意を逸らすために酒に酔ったふりをして演説を行い、そのまま歌を披露することになってしまった。

この歌は聴衆に大いに歓迎され、フロドは復唱することになったが、今度は自分が気を良くしたフロドは再び「牝牛が月をとびこした」と歌う部分になったところで自ら跳び上がってみせ、その拍子に転倒してうっかり[[一つの指輪]]を指にはめてしまう。フロドの姿がかき消えたことで集会室は騒然となり、かえって人々の注意を引く結果となってしまった。その場に居合わせた[[馳夫]]（[[アラゴルン二世]]）は'''あなたの友人たちが何をいったところで、あれほどひどいことにはならなかっただろう！'''と評している。

この歌は『[[トム・ボンバディルの冒険]]』にも収録されており、題名はそこで付されているもの。

牝牛と馬たち、逆立ちした、さ。

土曜日の皿は、家出をして、さ

『[[指輪物語]]』本編では'''今ではふつうこの中のほんの数行が憶えられているにすぎません。'''と述べられており、[[ビルボ・バギンズ]]の作ったこの歌が巡り巡ってマザー・グースとして今日まで伝えられることになった、という設定になっているものと思われる。
