『The Book of Lost Tales』は、イングランドの人Eriolが、偶然[[トル・エレッセア]]（に相当する島）にたどり着き、そこにある"The Cottage of Lost Play"において何人かの[[エルフ]]たちから[[第一紀]]のエピソードを聞く、という構造になっている。
この第1巻では、創世から[[人間]]の父祖たちの[[ベレリアンド]]定着までが語られている。
"Melko"とは、[[シルマリルの物語]]でいうメルコール、すなわち[[モルゴス]]のこと。また"Kôr"とは[[アマン]]本土における[[エルフ]]たちの都、[[シルマリルの物語]]でいう[[トゥーナ]]の丘なる[[ティリオン>ティリオン（地名）]]にあたる。
