『[[終わらざりし物語]]』にも『[[シルマリルの物語]]』にも未収録の[[トールキン>ジョン・ロナルド・ロウエル・トールキン]]の遺稿、『シルマリルの物語』の草稿、『[[指輪物語]]』初期原稿などを、[[クリストファ・トールキン]]が編集して出版した本。頭文字を取って「HoME」と称されることもあるほか、日本では『''中つ国の歴史''』などと表記されていることもある。全12巻と索引(Index)1巻からなる。
現在未邦訳だが、第5巻『[[The Lost Road and Other Writings>The History of Middle-earth/The Lost Road and Other Writings]]』の表題作「The Lost Road」のみ、『ユリイカ』1992年7月号トールキン生誕百年特集に赤井敏夫訳「失われた道」として掲載された。

巻は、おおむね執筆時代順に並んでいる。
1～5巻は『[[指輪物語]]』の執筆以前に書かれた原稿を中心としており、[[第一紀]]（と[[第二紀]]）の主なエピソード群が、初期の構想の形で収められている。

6～9巻が主に『[[指輪物語]]』の初期原稿で、執筆経緯は『指輪物語』の「著者ことわりがき」や『[[J.R.R.トールキン 或る伝記]]』などに触れられているように、完成形とはかなり異なる形となっている。9巻の後半には、『指輪物語』の後半を執筆していた時期と重なる時期に執筆された[[ヌーメノール]]関連の話「Notion Club Papers」などが収録されてる。

10～12巻が『指輪物語』の執筆以降に執筆されたもので、主として[[第一紀]]や[[第二紀]]の話となっている。12巻はほぼ[[追補編>指輪物語/追補編]]のメイキング的な内容だが、12巻の最後には、『指輪物語』の執筆以降に、続編として書き始められたが、ほとんど書き進められなかった遺稿が収められている。
