解説†
#amazon(4938461447,right)Iron Crown Enterprises(ICE)社より発売された、指輪物語（中つ国）を舞台にしたテーブルトーク・ロールプレイングゲーム（Wikipedia:テーブルトークRPG）。基本ルールには、TRPG『ロールマスター（Wikipedia:ロールマスター）』のものを簡易化して使用している。日本語版発売はホビージャパンだが、Second Editionは一時期ICE Japanより日本語版がPDFにて配布されていた。
ICE社による、原作設定を拡張したオリジナルの中つ国の設定（ナズグール全員の設定や、指輪物語劇中に登場しない土地、種族など）が多数存在する。
ルールは戦闘が非常にシビアで、「戦闘すると、すぐに誰かが死ぬか不具になるゲーム」とも言われる。いわゆるクリティカルヒットを処理する「痛打表」ルールが特徴的。この痛打を受けると、骨折で全治数ヶ月だの手足が切断だの、「内臓破裂で6ラウンドのたうち回った挙げ句に死亡」「（武器が）右耳から左耳へ抜けて死亡、ついでに耳垢も綺麗に取れる」「ゼリー状に潰される。へらで引き延ばすのは簡単なこと」など、書かれていることがかなりダーク。
ホビージャパンもICEも同シリーズから撤退したため、現在は入手困難となっている。
この作品以後、中つ国を舞台にした別のTRPGとしては、2002～2005年にかけてDecipher, Inc.が『The Lord of the Rings RolePlaying Game』を、その後Cubicle7社、その後Free League Publishing社が『一つの指輪：指輪物語TRPG』を発売している。

関連書籍†
1992年から、一部の編集者や著名なトールキン研究家による公式のファンブックである『Other Hands』が創刊され、シリーズが打ち切られた2年後の2001年まで刊行された。また、Other Mindsが刊行を終了した後には非公式の雑誌として『Other Minds』が2011年まで不定期刊行された。こちらは有志による所詮同人誌だが、Other Handsから継続してゲーム本編の設定に携わった編集者や研究者が記事を寄稿しており、半公式雑誌としての側面も併せ持つ。
近年ではテーブルゲームに関するフリーのWebマガジン『The Guild Companion』にも、一部の関係者が本編未使用の設定や展開終了後に作られた新しい設定に関する原稿を公開している。但し、その中には一般のプレイヤーが投稿した物の中から採用された設定が多いため、調べる際には注意が必要である。
