「The Book of Lost Tales」は、イングランドの人、Eriolが、偶然に[[トル・エレッセア]](に相当する島)にたどり着き、そこにある「The Cottage of Lost Play」において何人かの[[エルフ]]たちから[[第一紀]]のエピソードを聞く、という構造になっています。
この第1巻では、創世から[[人間]]の父祖たちの[[ベレリアンド]]定着までが語られています。
目次中の単語に関して。「MELKO」とは、[[シルマリルの物語]]でいう[[メルコール]]、すなわち[[モルゴス]]のことです。また、「KOR」とは[[アマン]]本土における[[エルフ]]たちの都、[[シルマリルの物語]]でいう[[トゥーナ]]の丘なる[[ティリオン>ティリオン(地名)]]のことです。
