解説†

ビルボ・バギンズが古い曲に合わせて歌うように作詞した歌。かつてビルボはフロド・バギンズと冒険の話をしながら豊水谷の小道を歩いたとき、彼にこの歌を教えた。
第三紀3018年（大いなる年）にフロドがサムワイズ・ギャムジーとペレグリン・トゥックと共に袋小路屋敷からくり窪へ向かい、末つ森の小道を通っていた時に三人はこの歌を歌った。歌い終わった直後に小道に黒の乗手（ハムール）が現れたが、ギルドール率いる上のエルフの一団が「ヴァルダへ捧げる歌」を歌いながらやって来たので、黒の乗手は退散した。

フロドが旅立ちに際して歌った歌†

指輪戦争後の第三紀最後の年（3021年）にフロドとサムワイズはくり窪へ向かったのと同じ道を通って、末つ森に向かった。森でフロドが「歩く歌」を異なる歌詞で口ずさむと、ギルドールの一団が「ヴァルダ讃歌」を歌いながら現れ、そこでフロドは西方へ去るエルロンドとガラドリエル、そしてビルボと合流した。
